What to do by layover length

Under 4 hours: stay in the airport

  • Terminal 3 is Emirates' huge hub with long duty-free halls.
  • Moving between concourses may need a train or bus; allow time.

4 to 8 hours

A short city visit can work if your passport allows entry. Allow about 50 minutes round trip, plus immigration both ways and at least 2 hours before departure to get back through security.

8 hours or more: leave the airport

Dubai Metro Red Line from Terminals 1 and 3 toward Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, about 20 to 30 minutes; taxis are plentiful.

Transit and visa basics

Visa on arrival or visa-free entry depends on your passport. Official source. Also check your airline's connection rules and the official Dubai International website.
